Curator's Note

When you receive the clams please take care to acclimate them to Temperature, we find them somewhat temperature sensitive. They also like cooler water if that is possible. Another important thing to do is to “burp” the clam of any air that it can take in if lifted out of the water. We have found that with the larger size clams they have a hard time eliminating air from around the gills if lifted out of the water. They can not rock back and forth like the smaller clams do to eliminate trapped air so if you will move them back and forth when placing in the tank to help any trapped air to come out a vent it will really help the clam. I recommend doing this when placing the clam in the tank and then again in a half hour or hour after the clam has opened fully as sometimes trapped air in the clam body can shift as it settles down. You will often see some small bubbles come out even after the large bubbles have escaped. We find this very important to do for initial success with large clams.
