Mark Martin on Cleaning Filter Socks Mark Martin is Director of Marine Ornamental Research at Blue Zoo
Cleaning filter socks is a pretty simple task. What I like to do is actually just throw them in the washer on gentle with the suggested dosage of chlorine bleach.
Before putting the filter socks in the washer, it is a good idea to turn each filter sock inside-out and hose it down to get rid of any loose detritus. Then toss the socks in the washer on gentle, add the bleach and start the cycle. When the cycle is complete, remove the filter socks from the washer and let them dry in the sun until all smell of bleach is gone. It's that simple.
If the idea of putting your filter socks in the washer is not to your liking, then you can always soak the filter socks overnight in a bucket of diluted bleach. In the morning, rinse the socks completely in fresh water and allow them to dry in the sun until all smell of bleach is gone.
