Eels can be a challenge to keep due to their ability to escape aquariums. Keep a tight fitting lid or light diffuser panel on the tank. Be careful when feeding as Eels eyesight is not the best. They may accidentally (or not so accidentally) bite your hand. We recommend the use of feeding tongs instead of using fingers. A bite from an Eel can cause a serious bacterial infection. It is important to clean the wound area well and immediately seek medical help if you see any signs of redness.
The striking white-on-black striping gives the Zebra Eel a clear reason for the name it sports. This attractive and docile Eel is the ideal moray for a community fish tank. Though similar in behavior as the Snowflake Eel, the Zebra Eel is more shy and retiring than itís cousin. The Zebra eel is probably one of the best suited eels to be kept in captivity. It easily adjusts to a captive diet and is normally mild-mannered. Is reportedly fish safe though there are incidents of Zebra Eels consuming smaller fishes. It has been noted that occasionally a larger specimen may bite a tank mate during feeding time. Zebra Eels will eat ornamental shrimps.
Feed a varied diet consisting of large chunks of meaty foods. These foods include krill, raw table shrimp, squid, clam and mussel.
